Toilet Training.
Though toilet training may seem straightforward at a glance, there’s not a one-size-fits-all approach to this essential daily living skill. Your BCBA will use an individualized approach to toilet train your child.
- Signs that your child is ready for potty training: - Hiding in another room or area while soiling their diaper.
- Grabbing or trying to take off their diaper when it’s full.
- Interest in sitting on the toilet.

- Set for success (BEFORE potty training): - Practice sitting on the potty. Begin with short increments of time and reward your child with a small treat (think a chocolate chip or Smartie). Increase the duration of their sit-time to at least 5-10 minutes.
- Try to catch your child before they soil their diaper and sit them on the potty. If you catch them mid-void, place them on the potty and have them finish in the toilet. Reward your child for any excrement in the toilet.
- Identify reinforcers that will be provided specific to success with toileting.
- Get the big kid undies and potty seat ready!

- Potty party! - Your BCBA will provide and implement a potty program that uses a systematic approach to the following goals: - Increasing the length of time between voiding.
- Having the child void immediately after sitting on the toilet.
